Why would a toy aimed at 6 – 12 year old girls be aimed at beauty advice and what girls should look like? Don’t they get enough stereotypes in the movies, tv, internet and everywhere else? I found this article on my Facebook newsfeed. It really is appalling. Funny the boy Legos don’t give brawn advice. Why a separate Legos for girls? They don’t want to build buildings and machines? Only their faces?? What next? Botox Barbie?? To my mind there is just too much emphasis on girls and looks. Why is a 6 – 12 year old girl being targeted? I see this on a lot more than this toy. It just seems to be a trend to sexify young girls as early as possible. I hope parents really think about the toys they buy their girls. It is fine to buy a doll or a “girl” toy if she wants it but buy a microscope or a building set at the same time. Better still get them a book they may go for the novelty. Also I think a parent buying young girls makeup or other adult stuff for preadolescent girls is really ill advised. Let your young girls be just that. Kids need to be kids to learn their way in the world. They will be categorized soon enough in the work place.
Right now women have to work long days and take care of the home and children. It is not easy. If they are going to have a decent life with opportunities to do what makes them happy they need all avenues open to them. Girls and boys don’t need to be put in little boxes and told what they are. They will figure it out. If we send the message that you have to be a certain way, act a certain way, look a certain way what child will blossom and be what they are meant to be. Not little rubber stamps but individuals. Boys have to have those opportunities too. Many men have chosen to raise their children instead of their wives. Not everyone is created to be a care giver. Some men really enjoy raising their children and being home with them. So if the boy wants to learn to cook or baby sit or even sew get over your prejudices and don’t hold them back.
Your child and all children are one of a kind never to be again. We all deserve for them to be happy and the best they can be.
