Social media just because of the nature of the beast is the heaven of the narcissist and sociopath. Hiding behind a profile where they can manipulate at will. They don’t have to give the usual physical clues that we associate with them. The narcissist can gather thousands of friends be the center of attraction and create a world where they are the queen or the king.
narcissist book

Unlike real life where they can be exposed for the liars they are they can create the perfect world and gain admirers. Their ramshackle apartment? No problem post something from a friend or a magazine. Work less than stellar? Well change from that shop clerk or MacDonalds server to a captain of industry, a lawyer anything you like. After all this is your world you can be whatever you say you are. Vacation a staycation in your house eating Cheetos in front of a tv watching Sponge Bob? That is no big deal either lots of photos you can put maybe a souvenir that suggests an exotic safari or world cruise. Easy peasy. The narcissist is in heaven and there are plenty of people on social media that take things at face value. The ones that don’t well you can make up things about them. Fake pm’s to slander them not hard to get rid of anyone that doesn’t share that overinflated, egotistical self you have built.

Now the sociopath this is one that really excels in social media.
Ex queen and minion
You can be queen of the world. Gather minions by the dozens. Turn people into puppets. Attack people just to see how much you can make them dance. Or you can use your minions to do it for you. What a playground it is! A sociopath has no feelings so for entertainment the suck out others. They love to create misery and will do anything they can. This is their theater and we are the actors to entertain them not real people.

Social Media is a good thing. I don’t want anyone to think I am knocking it. I am on several platforms myself. You meet so many people from all over the world. It is educational and enlightening and fun if used properly but like any other society you have the malignant personalities that troll it. Be careful who you friend and if you see people that are denigrating others ask yourself why? When all the good can come from it why does someone waste time on people they don’t like. They can always block and move on in Facebook and just unfollow on WP and others. There are billions of people on social media the trick is choose wisely who you friend and participate in it with caution.

I have included two excellent articles on social media hope you enjoy them.

I like how you point out noticing people who denigrate others. Recently had a woman that I observed on face book attacking other people for any possible reason. Most of it was simply annoying, but then she sent a friend request to one of my friends, and within a week and a half was sending them inbox messages saying degrading humiliating things to him. Then she unfriended him and called me to brag about this. I asked her why she felt the need to do this, if she didn’t like him, why did she not just unfriend him and she said because he needed to be taught. That she then unfriended him because she did not was to be connected to such a “loser”. I took her lead, decided I did not want to be connected to such a nasty mean person, told her I did not like the what she said to him, nor did I like the things she said to or about other people. I then unfriended her and proceeded to archive any messages from her without reading them. She finally made a blog of her own, just to send me messages there, with I marked as spam. I let my friend know that I was sorry she had said those things to him.
My rules as far as face book friends go, if I wouldn’t sit down to coffee with you and I don’t know that you would sit down to coffee with me, you aren’t my face book friend. This woman was someone I had gone to grade school with and reconnected with. It did not take long before I realized that she may have made me laugh then, but not now. I did mention to her that this was not fun. I do not know if she has given up on antagonizing me yet, but I will not respond to her in any way.
    I love your blog.

So crazy, all the politics and the etiquette involved. I am so glad I never fell into this world, I think I would have fallen apart or gone nuts by now

It is but one tool a narcissist or sociopath uses but one of the most efficient. Most people on social media are just nice folks that like to make friends and be sociable. Anything can be used as a tool.

You know…I first saw what you describe in Second Life. It’s worse there because the narcissist can lost themselves in a fantasy of fame and wealth…and God help anyone with talent…Of course I joined SL with my own problems–so I learned and toughened up.

The best strategy for dealing with the smear campaigns is to tell your own story and tell the truth.

Absolutely, if you get that sort of attention use it to your advantage not to fight back against stupidity.

Right! Fighting human stupidity is as stupid and futile as rolling a stone six times your weight uphill.

Especially now that “stupid” is a lifestyle choice.
